Zach Murray

Founder, Foreplay

Affiliate World AppearancesAW Asia 2023

Biography

Murray’s route into advertising technology began on the creative side, through motion design and creative direction. That background matters because Foreplay was built around a frustration creative teams knew well: useful advertising inspiration was scattered, difficult to organize and quickly lost. He turned the private habit of saving ads into a collaborative research system, giving marketers a way to study patterns without pretending that inspiration and imitation are the same thing.

Murray is a former creative director and motion designer who became the founder of Foreplay, a platform built around advertising inspiration, creative research, and workflow.

Murray’s career reflects the rise of creative operations as a core performance discipline. As targeting advantages narrow and platforms automate more media decisions, the ability to research, organize, brief, produce, and learn from creative becomes increasingly decisive.

Before Foreplay, Murray built a motion-design and web-development studio and created and sold the home-decor brand Nomadic Fabrics. That blend of creative craft and founder experience gave him a clear view of the friction inside advertising teams, which he later turned into software for saving, organizing, briefing and learning from high-performing creative.

What sets him apart

At Affiliate World

At Affiliate World Asia 2023, Murray broke TikTok click-through improvement into four fast creative changes: keep overlay text present, cut every one or two seconds, increase the number of scenes and locations, and reach the call to action sooner. The advice was deliberately concrete. Its impact came from translating the vague instruction to ‘make better TikToks’ into editing decisions a team could observe and test. The session also reinforced a larger idea behind Foreplay: creative performance improves when teams build a shared library of evidence instead of starting every brief from an empty page.

Why the ideas mattered

Affiliate marketers have always collected ads, hooks, landing pages, and angles. Foreplay formalizes that behavior into a collaborative system. Murray’s work is relevant because it shows how practitioner habits can become scalable products and how creative knowledge can be treated as an institutional asset.

Career and influence

Foreplay’s growth gave Murray a wider role in the creative-strategy conversation. The Affiliate World appearance marked the point at which a former creative practitioner was increasingly recognized as the founder of infrastructure used by other creative teams.
